IMO: Most Influential Music Artist of this Century

3:09 PMDollie Simpson

One of my Facebook friends recently asked who was the most influential music artist to you from 2000 to today. It was one of those posts where I read though all the comments but no one picked the same band as me. I thought about it for a day before I decided to comment. My answer?

Twenty One Pilots! It may be an unpopular opinion because people love to hate on them, but the records they are breaking don't lie- this band is revolutionary.

If you currently live under a rock and have no idea who Twenty One Pilots is, they are a "Schizoid Pop" duo consisting of front man Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun, who are getting some serious radio play and breaking records. A quick google search will bring up all sorts of exciting facts about the band:
  • TOP is only the third musical act in history to have two songs in the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, after Elvis and The Beatles. (But unlike Elvis, the lead Tyler Joseph actually writes his own music and plays multiple instruments!)
  • TOP were the first act to top both the Pop Charts and the Alt Rock Charts at the same time in over a decade (Green Day was the last), for "Ride" and "Heathens". Interesting to note is that this is the first time in the charts history (started in 1992) that the chart toping songs were different songs, and not the same song on both charts.
  • Both the songs "Ride" and "Stressed Out" are the only tracks written by a single writer to reach the Top 10 in over a year. GO Tyler Joseph!
  •  On Alternative Songs, no act other than Twenty One Pilots has spent time atop the Billboard chart with three songs this year.
  • No artist had led Alternative Songs with three singles in the same year (Last was Kings of Leon in 2009).
I could go on and on but I won't. I think the main thing I love about TOP is that they give me hope in the music industry again. Just about five years ago they were in Columbus, Ohio self releasing their first two albums, putting on free shows at the local High School and having their mom pass out flyers on the street corner. And now they are putting on killer shows to sold out crowds at the biggest arenas. All the while they seem to remain true to their roots, still turning down bigger record deals with signing bonuses or big tour sponsorship offers.

The fun thing is that this question is who is the most influential artist of this century TO YOU? So there is really no wrong answer. Let me know in the comments below who you think it is!

XOXO
Dollie

  1. Probably, for me, it's Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. She was the hardest working person in the music industry, I think, and was just under the surface of "success." If you haven't seen the documentary "Miss Sharon Jones," it's well worth the time. And for me, she blew open a whole world of soul music that I probably wouldn't have discovered without her influence. Just wish she hadn't been among those claimed by 2016... :(
