VLV 18: Our Top Picks!

5:00 AMZack Simpson

With Viva Las Vegas quickly approaching, and excitement building, we thought we'd share some of the acts that we are really looking forward to. Viva Las Vegas for us is first and foremost about the music. Our schedule for the weekend is almost entirely dictated by which band is playing and when. Here we'll break down each day with a few of our picks. This is by no means a definitive list, that would get much to long. We fully encourage you to make your own list of must sees, but also leave plenty of room for exploring. Stumbling into a room with a hot band on stage you know nothing about is part of the great VLV experience!

-SweetPea's Hooch and Smooch, 1pm, Bienville: The ultimate VLV meet and greet! This one is especially for first timers. The weekend is officially starting and the room is full of smiling, friendly faces. Go make new friends and listen to some fun bands play!

-The Hi-Tones, 8pm, Ballroom: They're a rockabilly band from Russia! You can't let them travel that far and not see them. Also, they're the first band of the weekend to play in the main Ballroom so the energy ought to be amazing!

-The Go-Getters, 11pm, Ballroom: These guys have been playing all the rockin' festivals for over twenty years now! They put on a great show full of songs to sing along and tap your toes to! This is one of Dollie's top picks for the weekend for sure!

-Kay Marie, 6pm, Bienville: We've unfortunately missed the few opportunities we've had to see her perform so hopefully we'll be able to fix that at Viva. Many of our friends who have seen her live speak very highly. If this music video is any indication, we are in for a treat!

-The Rhythm Bomb Showcase #1, 9pm, Bienville: For our money, Rhythm Bomb Records has currently the best stable of artists. This show is a great way to see a lot of good bands in a rapid fire succession. Jittery Jack, The Rip 'em Ups, Nico Duportal etc. Don't miss it!

-Omar and The Stringpoppers, 1:45am, Ballroom: Sadly, VLV 18 marks the farewell performance for this legendary Southern California rockabilly band. So if you haven't yet had the chance to see Omar, don't miss your last!

-Dion, 4:30pm, Car Show: His voice is one of the defining sounds of  1950's pop music. This year marks his first ever appearance at VLV. If this isn't a can't miss, we don't know what is. Arrive early, there will be a crowd!

-Jake Calypso and His Red Hot, 9pm, Bienville: Traditional, bare-bones rockabilly all the way from France! We've been hoping to have him at VLV for a few years now and couldn't be more excited!

-Stars of Rockabilly Show, 9:30pm, Ballroom: The legends, the very reason an awesome event like Viva Las Vegas even exists. These guys aren't getting any younger, but they're still rocking the house! See them now while you can, and show them some support!

-The Dave & Deke Combo's Hillbilly Fest, 8:30pm, Showroom: What was once a treat only for the Southern California audience is now packing up and heading to the shiny lights of Las Vegas! Hillbilly Fest is as zany as it comes so be sure and pack your overalls and corn cob pipe!

-The Sonics, 9:30pm, Ballroom: Sure you can catch them at the car show as well but we're looking forward to the more intimate Ballroom show. Their garage rock sound ought to really stand out amongst the rest of the weekend's rockabilly offerings.

-Doo Wop All Stars Show, 11pm, Ballroom: Another chance to see some legends sing. The past doo wop showcases were always amongst the most talked about performances of the weekend. We expect this one to live up to the billing!

So there's some of our picks. But just some, we left out so many bands! We didn't even mention the actual events like the car show or pool party. VLV has so much to offer that you can't possibly see everything. In fact, you'll probably have more fun if you don't stress about trying to see too much. Make your list of musts,  but leave some free time and let Viva "come to you."
