The Rockabilly Rockout: Friday

Continued from our Thursday coverage of The Rockabilly Rockout:

Kicking things off on Friday was The Firecrackers from San Diego, CA. This band features two members of Roy Rapid and the Rhythm Rock Trio but their sound is very different. Tempos were very upbeat and ideal for dancing and the onstage energy was excellent.

For those who remember VLV at the Gold Coast, the vendor room for the Rockout was located in the ballroom where the bands used to be. A nice touch was the addition of a DJ and small dance floor inside the vendor area. We didn't see many people using it, but maybe in the future people will use it as the weekend gains in popularity. It was great to be back at The Gold Coast, just like the good 'ol days!

Our pals Roy Rapid and the Rhythm Rock Trio from San Diego were next up. They had the same travel itinerary as us, having just played at The New England Shake-Up the weekend prior. These guys aren't playing much nowadays so we were happy we got to see them at two weekenders back to back!

The Margraves from Seattle were next on the bill. The Margraves are a new rock and roll band about town, so we haven't seen them much. This is only the second or third time seeing them. They are like a breath of fresh air to us. The lead singer Roy Kay's voice is crisp which goes perfectly with their clean late 50's tones and matching gold Fender guitars. Roy's wife Ramona got on stage for one song and sang sultry backup vocals. We look forward to big things from this band!

By Friday night most of the ticket holders were in attendance and ready to cut a rug! Everyone was wearing their best threads. What the crowd lacked in size it made up for in energy.

The main event, and highlight of the weekend, was Carlos and the Bandido's from England. Carlos rarely makes it out to the states to play, so it is always a treat when we get to see him. He puts on the best shows. He always has the ladies swooning with his suave moves and good looks.

As with all rockabilly weekenders, we end with the best DJs spinning the hottest platters!

Stay tuned for our next post about Saturday night!
