This time last year I went to visit my sister and brother-in-law who were living in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. It is just south of Cancun, in the Mayan Riviera. I have never been to this area of Mexico before, or in the Caribbean Sea, so it was the trip of a lifetime. Zack wanted to stay home with his family for the holidays, so I went solo. I wanted to share my trip with you all but I never got around to it. I figured it's better late than never, right?
I had a few problems with the airline I took. They canceled my flight the day before, moved me to another flight the next night and never bothered to tell me. I ended up being a day late, routed to Guadalajara and delayed further due to weather. I don't speak the best spanish so I was a little stressed. After I made it to Cancun safely we drove to Playa Del Carmen and I got settled in.
You think after my red-eye flight I would be ready to sleep, but instead I was ready to start parting. We ate a ton on this trip, and drank a bit too. They had some great food there! My favorite bar we went to was Senor Frogs. It was a really fun place where you sat on swings at the bar, the drinks were a foot tall and the staff danced on the bar. While we were there they brought a sign that said I was the prettiest girl in the bar. They sure knew how to get good tips!
It rained a lot there. It would randomly start pouring! It was warm though, so it wasn't so bad. My hair was wrecked the whole trip!
All of the bars and restaurants opened up to the beach, with hammocks, trampolines and lounge chairs. We had a blast jumping on the trampoline that night. Then we walked along the beach and saw these elaborate sand sculptures they built for the holidays.
We spent a lot of the time snorkeling too. This was the first time I had snorkeled anywhere outside of a pool. This is at Yalku Lagoon.
My brother-in-law was taunting a fish and I was swimming behind him, so I was the unlucky one to get bit. It was a small fish so there was only the tiniest bit of blood. It made a good joke though. All week I went around joking that a shark bite me.
We did lots of shopping too. I loved all of the handmade artisan crafts they sold on the street.
I think my favorite thing we did was visit Xcaret. It is basically a nature theme park with natural caves, water features, ruins and beautiful greenery. They also had an animal preserve, rafting and zipline.
My favorite part was swimming in the underground river! It went in and out of caves. It was so cool!
I loved the butterfly preserve!
And the aquarium!
I also loved the turtle exibit. They hatch, raise and release turtles to help the declining population. Did you know that I was hatched and am actually a turtle?
We had a bit too much fun taking pictures with everything, if you can tell. Including these ruins, which they actually allow people to climb on.
This post ended up being too long for one post, so the next post with Part 2 is will be live tomorrow! Stay tuned.
