Mid-Century Modern Rockabilly

Palm Springs Honeymoon Part 1

4:43 PMDollie DeVille

The morning after our reception we left for our honeymoon. We decided to honeymoon in Palm Springs. It was the perfect combination of solitude, sun, and vintage kitsch. They also have great mid-mod history and antique shopping.

Palm Springs is only a few hours drive away from our house, which was perfect because we were exhausted from the prior nights' festivities.

While honeymooning in Palm Springs there was no doubt that we would be staying at the Orbit In. I have posted about visiting the Orbit In before, but we had never stayed there. The Orbit In was built in 1957 and feels exactly the same today as you imagine it would have back then. The owners have done a great job of maintaining the original aesthetic and outfitting the rooms in vintage and reproduction mid-mod furnishings.

Staying there was a real treat for us since we have wanted to for so long.

The first night we booked the Frey Lounge. This is the most coveted room in the nine room boutique hotel. The room is entered through the sliding glass door and patio that opens out to the pool.

This is the only room with a fireplace.

Wet bar/kitchenette.

The bed was fluffy and super comfy.

The bathroom has pink tile and felt like a home away from home for us!

There is a private patio off the back of the room.

The patio has room to sit, eat, and smoke if you like.

The highlight of this room is the outdoor shower, the only one like it in the hotel! Since Palm Springs has clear warm/hot weather all year around you can shower outside under the stars anytime you like!

This is the view of the pool from our room- not too shabby!

First order of business after checking in- Orbitini Hour! Everyday at 5pm the hotel serves up complimentary Orbitini's- sake, cranberry juice and orange juice served over ice. It was easy and delicious. We made sure to take the recipe home with us to always remind us of our stay! They also serve up popcorn and pretzels with the cocktails for free.

After we were a little loosened up from cocktail hour we changed into our quintessential vintage honeymoon garb and hit the town!

The good thing about Palm Springs is that it is such a small town that you can walk just about anywhere you want to go! We stumbled upon a hat shop where Zack found a nice fedora to buy.

While we where there the staff snapped a picture of us for their hat board. We had been in Palm Springs only a few hours and we were already local celebrities!

Zack looks mighty fine in his new fedora.

We ate dinner at a restaurant that the Orbit In recommended- MatchBox. It was a moody little place with a second story patio overlooking a courtyard.

I don't remember what this was, but it was delicious. I think it was an appetizer with fried cheese and marinara. For dinner I got a salad and Zack got a pizza. They also had Magners Hard Cider, which I am a big fan of.

Then we took a nice warm night time stroll back to the hotel.

The hotel was empty, so we had the place to ourselves!

Since this is an adults-only hotel they let you swim anytime of the day or night as long as you are respectful to the other guests and keep the noise down. The salt water pool is a perfect temp for a midnight swim, but there is also a hot tub if you want a hot soak. After swimming we made good use of that outdoor shower too!
