Brunch Americana at The Redwood

2:51 PMDollie DeVille

Last Sunday was a very eventful afternoon at the Brunch Americana. A good sized crowd gathered early to catch the opening act: J.W. Long and the Wayman Creek Boys. AKA Amber’s brother Scooter’s band. I have always thought Scooter had a good voice, so I was happy to hear that he got this band together and eager to see them for the first time. This was their first time playing the brunch, but I can guarantee it will not be their last! They were a little bit rock and roll, and a whole lotta honky tonk! They did some covers that you don’t hear often enough, which was refreshing. The crowd loved them! I wish they could have played longer, but they had to do a shortened set to fit all three bands into the afternoon.

The next act on was none other then Amber Foxx! Like always, she was amazing and put on a great show. She had Dave Berzansky on steel for the afternoon, which got me to thinking……steel is always amazing……but I would really like to see her have someone on keyboard! That would be awesome! How about Carl Sonny Leland? Note to self: Talk to Amber and figure out how to make that happen.

Cutest little fans ever!

The headliner for the afternoon was Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague and his 18 wheelers featuring Deke Dickerson on guitar. They did 2 sets, and included a few new covers such as “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue” and “One Woman Man”. Though no one will really remember what songs they did that afternoon. No, not because everyone was drunk (though they were). People wont remember what songs the band played because all they will remember is when Sugarballs hung from the chandelier. Yes, that really happened, twice! During the “Dance Sugarballs Dance” portion of the show, Sugarballs got on top of the table to dance, then got the bright idea to jump for the chandelier and swing from it like a monkey on a coconut tree. Amazingly, it held him, and it was hilarious. Sadly, I didn’t get a picture of it. Later in the show I could see in his eyes that he wanted to do it again, so I made sure to grab my camera. He did the same show again, but this time, he had his guitar around his shoulders when he jumped for the chandelier. This time I managed to get a picture! But all did not end well. His guitar swung around and hit the birthday girl Jenny in the face. Ouch! Luckily for her, she is a navy girl, and took it like a champ! I bet the booze helped a little. The Redwood had a first aid kit, so they stopped the bleeding and patched her up really nice. I bet she had a nice shiner the next day, but the event made a great opportunity for pictures and woman-beating jokes. Jenny is my new hero. I need to learn to take a hit like that! Overall, this was a great brunch!
